Hi, I am Roberto Salandin, in Factory Communication I take care of all the management of hosting services and maintenance of sites developed on WordPress.
Since Factory Communication deals with Strategy Consulting you might think that this article, perhaps, is taken out of context.
However, if a site or eCommerce is not working properly, it can undermine any strategy, even a well-planned one.
That is why I took the time to write this article.
On March 10, 2026, Automattic made available WordPress version 6.9.2, a critical security maintenance, but within 48 hours other updates were released, up to the current version 6.9.4.
Don’t be frightened, if you haven’t already done so you will only find the latest update available.
Be careful, however, because of the type of update (security update), every website owner should check that the new version is already active, if not, perform the update immediately.
But that’s not all, in the same hours Automattic also updated WooCommerce to version 10.6.0, with a long list of bugfixes, and dozens of other plugins released updates to ensure compatibility with new versions of WordPress and WooCommerce.
Manual WordPress 6.9.4 update: we ran it immediately on all sites managed by the agency

What is different about this update?
Unlike major updates (Major Releases). which introduce substantial improvements and new features, versions marked with three digits (such as 6.9.4) are usually “Security and Maintenance Releases. “
That’s why this latest update, marked as Security Update, is not optional, but vital to the health of your digital space.
WordPress: Why do you need to update it now?
1. Security: Closing the door to hackers
The main reason is security. Version 6.9.2 fixes recently discovered vulnerabilities that could allow malicious attackers to inject malicious code or gain unauthorized access.
Once a security update is made public, the details of the flaws also become known to cybercriminals, who begin scanning the Web for sites that have not yet been updated.
2. Core Stability and Bug Fixes.
Following the grand launch of WordPress 6.9 “Gene” (which occurred in December 2025), some minor conflicts were reported regarding the new “Notes” feature (the comments between blocks for collaboration) and the integration of the Command Palette.
Version 6.9.2 fixes these minor glitches, ensuring a smooth editing experience without sudden crashes.
3. Preparation for WordPress 7.0
We are now close to the release of WordPress 7.0, scheduled for April 9, 2026. Keeping the site updated to version 6.9.2 ensures that the transition to the next “major release” (which will introduce native artificial intelligence and Google Docs-style real-time collaboration) will occur without compatibility errors.
What does this update include?
- Security Patch: Protection against potential XSS attacks and improved data sanitization in blocks.
- Performance: Optimizations in loading scripts for the Command Palette.
- PHP compatibility: Improved error log handling for those already using PHP 8.3 or later.
How to proceed (Safely)
Many sites update automatically, a practice we strongly advise against.
If your site has not yet updated, or if you wisely have automatic updates disabled, you can proceed with these simple steps:
- Make a full backup: before each update, make sure you have a copy of files and databases.
- Update any themes and plugins first: If there are updates, do them before updating WordPress.
- Check the Dashboard: go to Dashboard > Updates and, if there is an update available, click on “Update Now.”
- Clear the C ache: After the update, clear the cache of the server, plugins and browser to see the changes right away and check that the site is working properly.
Don’t trust automatic WordPress updates?
You do well, that’s why…
WordPress automatic updates usually work, but not always.
When an item update fails, at best everything remains as before.
If, on the other hand, the update is applied, but it is the update itself that is having or creating problems, it could be the case that some section of the site is not working as it should. Pages that don’t show up, scripts that don’t work, orders and/or contacts that fail.
In the worst cases, the site becomes a melancholy blank page the infamous WordPress “death page.”
The worst thing is that you can notice it even after hours, or days, and usually specialized intervention is required to resolve.
If you don’t notice it in time, you also make a bad impression with visitors and customers, not to mention the financial damage when it happens to an institutional, or e-commerce site.
On the other hand, if you decide to turn off automatic updates, you will have to take care of site maintenance on a regular basis and with some frequency, or have someone take care of it for you.
You must not neglect maintenance; an outdated site is a vulnerable site, an invitation to all web malicious attackers.
