Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP)

Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), announced in January 2026, is a new open standard for agentic commerce (agentic commerce) designed to simplify and unify online transactions between artificial intelligence, retailers and payment platforms.

UCP enables AI agents to interact directly with e-commerce systems.

This allows users to purchase products without visiting the websites of various brands.

The key points of the UCP standard are:

  • Agent Commerce: E-commerce is moving from a “search-click-purchase” model to one in which an AI assistant manages the entire purchasing process.
  • Open and Shared Standard: UCP acts as a common language between AI agents and merchants’ back-end systems, eliminating the need for custom integrations for each platform.
  • Integration with AI: UCP enables checkout functionality directly within conversations with AI, making the process faster and reducing cart abandonment.
  • Benefits for Retailers: Retailers who integrate UCP can connect to customers with high purchase intent directly on Google platforms, while maintaining control over their catalog and customer relationships.
  • Collaboration: The protocol is developed in collaboration with industry partners such as Shopify, Mastercard, Stripe, Target and Walmart.

UCP supports the entire purchase lifecycle, from product discovery to payment to post-sale, facilitating cart management and shipping information.
